Human Beings: God’s Representatives
Genesis 1:26-29
Who are you?
1. You were made in God’s image.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:26-27
What it doesn’t mean:
- We are exactly like God.
- We have bodies like His.
Four theories:
- To be made in the image of God is to be a uniquely spiritual being.
- To be made in the image of God is to be a uniquely moral being.
- To be made in the image of God is to be a uniquely intellegent being.
- To be made in the image of God is to be a uniquely relational being.
2. You were made to exercise dominion over Creation.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28
Fifth Theory: To be made in the image of God is to function or act like Him by living out the dominion that He has personally delegated to us.
Summary:
I represent Him in who I am: a spiritual, moral, intelligent, and relational being.
I represent Him in what I do: exercising the dominion He’s delegated to me over His creation.
You were made by God, for God, to represent God.
